Job Description

Role Objective:

Overall responsibility of the Farm’s vegetable section and its management; Administration, Crop establishment, Crop nutrition, Crop protection, Irrigation, Harvesting and any other agronomic issues that may need to be executed according to GAP demands.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Human Resources and Administration
  • Planning, recruiting, staffing, training, motivating, and disciplining of the farm labour force on day to day basis (4500 employees)
  • Manager labour issues that may bring the company in dispute with workers or the outsiders
  • Grievance handling and discipline within farm level and those under you.
  • To maintain staff discipline and welfare in accordance with the company policy.
  • Lead the team and prepare for Audits
2. Crop Husbandry
  • Planning and implementation of land preparation, planting, irrigation & fertilizer applications, pest control, picking/harvesting and transport activities.
  • To initiate and implement new projects approved by management
  • To ensure that the right plant population is attained at planting.
  • To ensure weed free fields and general farm hygiene through timely weed control and general sanitation.
  • To ensure timely crop support, coiling, tucking, stringing and removal.
  • To oversee irrigation and scheduling of irrigation based on different crop requirements and stages of production. Reduction of water wastage from leaks and over irrigation.
  • Leading the agronomy team to ensure that pest control is managed, and all pests and diseases are always kept below threshold.
  • To oversee the farm’s crop nutrition in terms of implementation of fertilizer plans, composting / manure application and foliar feeding.
  • To oversee labor planning and allocations.
  • To oversee and be responsible for production and forecasting short and long-term production. This would be a key KPI
  • To be the link between the packhouse and the field in terms of timely product supply, quantity, and quality issues.
  • To look at issues of sustainability and implement programs pursuant to achievement of agreed sustainable goals.
3. Machines, Tools and Vehicles
  • Maintenance and service of machines done on a schedule as they become due.
  • All equipment kept clean, in designated areas after work.
  • Coordinate movement of motor vehicles within the farm and to other farms or designations as may be necessary.
4. Security
  • Being the senior most employee on the farm you are the final ultimate custodian of the company property and workers that are under you as such you should ensure their safety. Any treat must be acted upon, involve/inform the authority if need be.
5. Record Keeping
  • To ensure that various team leaders, scouts and supervisors keep accurate records of all operations carried out in the section.
6. Health and Safety
  • To maintain the standard measures of the health and safety among the farm staff and farm area.
  • To be part of Health and Safety committee
7. Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the immediate supervisor, manager or senior management.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

1. Ability to meet agreed production targets
2. Quality of produce supplied to pack houses (65% PO)
3. Ability to make predictions with a narrow margin of error (15%)
4. Farm and crop cleanliness.
5. Timeliness and quality of farm cultural operations i.e. support, weeding, coiling, tucking, topping.
6. Irrigation efficiency and management of waste.
7. Insect pest and disease control
8. Plant nutrition
9. Staff discipline
 
Key Competencies
  • Degree in Agriculture or related field
  • Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in Farming horticultural crop.
  • Must be conversant with open field farming technology.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of chemical application, disease, and pest control.
  • A proven track record of meeting various targets and setting an effective management team.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Should be able to work and reside in the farm
